This is a painting inspired by one of the darkest weeks in New Zealand. An earthquake struck Christchurch on Tuesday causing mass destruction and loss of life; this has affected each and everyone of us while watching the devasting news as the week unfolds. Many families are struggling to find their missing loved ones, or are grieving for those who have perished. I want to express a message of hope - for a physical or spiritual connection to the ones who are lost - our prayers are with them.

Have a lot of unfinished work in the studio and quite keen to get something completed soon! The baby wearing gumboots with bear ears is my first sculpture using red raku clay - it seems to be working well for larger pieces. He stands about 70cm tall and is not happy as he's lost his bearsuit!!

This can be viewed at Hot Ginger Gallery in Kerikeri which is on the move to a new larger premises beside The Bakehouse on Kerikeri Rd. We are having a brilliant Autumn up north with lots of sunshine and clear blue skies - hardly cold enough to light a fire yet! A couple of exhibitions are coming up that are well worth having a look at on Queens Birthday Weekend. So if you are up in the Bay of Islands for a break make sure you take a peek! (I have work showing in both exhibitions)
At the Copthorne Waitangi Art Show North is having its 1st annual exhibition opening night Friday 4th June and continuing until Monday 7th June. This will have a large variety of art from Northlands local artists and school students.
On the same weekend running for 3 weeks will be the Matariki Art trail which is held in 7 Galleries in the Kerikeri district. Start at Hot Ginger Gallery which is also having a sale with 20% off many of the current stock.
I have a bit of time to play with the clay now our Party Hire business is wound down to winter trade. Have just made a baby in a bear suit which still needs to be bisque fired and glazed - very cute I think!!

Kerikeri Artist Donna Feary did our small community proud by winning 1st Prize in the Glass Category of the Royal Easter Show which opened last night in Auckland. I also managed to get a 4th prize for my 1st entry into the ceramics section which was really encouraging!!

My poor babies have been left for a while as the wedding season has arrived in full force, so my hire business is keeping me away from my art!! Fortunately I have been invited to a group exhibition at Hot Ginger Gallery which opened last Friday. This has forced me to paint in the wee hours to finish some of the art I started last year. The exhibition is called Love in the Lolly Shop - a fitting name for an exhibtion starting on Valentines weekend in a Gallery that was once a lolly shop! Here are some of the pieces I have on show.

Here my latest titty titty bum bum ceramic sculptures - they are slowly evolving!!! The white one is white clay mixed with porcellan,then fired and soaked in tea. The other is made with the same white clay; but fired with a golden/green glaze which turned out great over the white clay.

I havent done very much on this piece as I have been busy doing the books for our Party Hire Business. Just had my 1st firing using white clay. I mixed white clay with some of Northlands Matauri Bay clay which is one of the best porcelan clays in the world - a group of us were lucky enough to visit the clay works a few weeks ago. I have used a clear glaze then soaked the sculptures in tea to give it a crazed effect.

I have finally finished the tryptic I started last month. Its a bit of a sad painting as the woman in the middle is tearful as she prays that one day she may have a child. I have put this piece into Northlands Matariki Exhibition which opens tomorrow night at the Copthorne Waitangi. I have just finished painting two lovely ladies on an old wooden nut bowl - the grain has come through the paint which gives it a wonderful "distressed paint" effect!! Makes a gorgeous wall hanging thats a little bit different!

Had fun painting on clay for the first time today. A small fired piece of clay was pinched into a triangular shape with 3 flat sides just waiting for faces to be pulled out of them!! I really liked the effect!

Started painting again this week; great to have a brush back in my hand - and I'm just loving it! Have a tryptic in mind and this is the 1st canvas which is nearly complete. She has a long red dress on which I havent finished yet - so will post her up again when she's done!! I painted this for a close friend for her birthday which was today. This abstact of a nun is reminecent of her upbringing - representing the catholic influences from her School and Church. She loves the painting - and I have to admit I have a soft spot for it too!!!

When I went back to Sydney for Xmas I found one of my large canvases in storage; so I decided to buy some paints to start a painting that I could finish when I go back to Sydney later this year. Its very large piece (1.8m x 1.1) - I haven't painted something this size for quite some time!! This painting is partly inspired by a quote I heard from another artist - hence the paintings title "Lollipops and Sunshine". It shows the perfect family portrait - but all is not what it seems as the turmoil of their lives is hidden in the abstract background of the painting. I"m looking forward to finishing this off in September!!

Hi to you all from the Bay of Islands New Zealand! This top part of NZ as most of you kiwis know is a quiet, beautiful place to live -and a gorgeous part of the country to visit - especially in summer!! And its been a hot, dry one up here so far this year! I have been lucky enough to move back here from Australia 3 years ago - have been away far too long and love being back!!
